Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Lordly Peregrine, Part II, or What the Hey?

IMG_4331Saturday morning, I noticed something on top of St. Michael’s cross. Was it a dead bird, prey of the Peregrine perching there the night before? IMG_4332A slightly closer view from the flank of Sunset Park itself, with no intervening window. (Getting closer to the actual building means descending the hill and losing the overview as the tower looms above.) Here the thing looks… suspiciously like a sneaker! Which would be strange indeed. What do you think? Of course, now that I’ve planted the idea of “sneaker” in your head, we just may be playing out some Antonioni script.IMG_4343Later in the day, there was only a nubbin of something left. (Usually, it’s been uncluttered up there.)

  1. WOW! Love, love love your posts. So, is “it” a pigeon?

    1. I don’t know. But I can’t imagine how a sneaker could have got up there. Continuing to monitor the situation from the raven’s nest here…
