Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Croton Point Field Trip

Haliaeetus leucocephalusI’m leading a trip up to Croton Point to look for Bald Eagles with Brooklyn Brainery. The trip sold out before I had a chance to post notice of it here.

The picture above is from last winter. There is now a confirmed Bald Eagle nest in Staten Island, or, rather, offshore of Staten Island, or rather a couple of eagles are making signs of building a nest, or rather there are contested rumors of a nest…. Stay tuned!

[Disclaimers: Bald Eagles not guaranteed. Exposure to outdoors may increase life-span. Void where prohibited.]

  1. You’ve certainly found a good way to live your life. Thanks for sharing with us.

    1. Thank you so much, Susan! I try to counter-act the existential aspects of existence, which can sometimes be terrifying, with the transcendental. I’ve found I can do this to some extent by walking outside, so I hope also (ever the pedagogue) that I can inspire others to find delight in their worlds, too, right outside their doors. Um, and sometimes inside those doors, with the spiders and such.
