Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Eclipsed

Sunrise over RockawayThe hybrid eclipse of the Sun this morning was mostly drowned in the clouds over the Rockaway Peninsula. A little bit of our life-giving star was briefly visible, through Nate’s DIY binocular hack, with the dark curve of Moon upon it. Still, a gorgeous morning to watch the sunrise from the oceanside end of the recently reopened Steeplechase Pier off the Coney Island Boardwalk. On the way back, we noted a male Kestrel hunting over a scrubby lot destined for a roller coaster, which made it a two Kestrel weekend.Sunrise

  1. So that’s what it’s like to be up that early in the morning.
    Thanks for sharing the experience.

  2. Nothing to do with your wonderful photography…Just found a dead woodcock (I think it is a woodcock) on W. 55th st in Manhattan. It has an amazingly long bill. Are there people who would want the beautiful carcass?

    1. Yes! Pop it in the freezer. The American Museum of Natural History may be interested or have other suggestions. Try Paul Sweet in their Ornithology Dept. sweet@amnh.org
