Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Red-Spotted Purple and Azure

Limenitis arthemisIn Sterling Forest State Park, a Red-spotted Purple. Limenitis arthemis has two rather different forms, the other, more northerly, one known as the White Admiral.
CelastrinaThe “Spring Azure Complex, Celastrina ladon and others,” is how the Kaufman Field Guide refers to these small, widespread, and common butterflies that are azure on the upperside of their wings, but rather lighter on the underside. Seen on the Brooklyn Promenade.

  1. I never knew the red-spotted purple had a second form. Cool. I guess I’m too far south (in NC) to see one though.

    1. And so different looking, too.
