Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Election Day.

It’s a pretty clear choice between reaction and moderation today. If you know a nature lover who isn’t planning to vote — like tens of millions of Americans, tragically — perhaps you can convince him or her to go to the polls today? Chances are extremely good that they are not Romney fans.

The Romney-Ryan-Rove money power and its voter suppression efforts — why do they hate freedom and democracy so much? because they’re a minority-appeal party and must con, cheat, and steal their way to power — requires a massive turn-out of future-thinking citizens concerned about this world, not any presumed next one, to counteract it.

  1. Right. Such a danger for the environment. Not to mention we animals.

  2. I’m not American (I’m Canadian), but I’m glad Obama was re-elected!

    1. Now there won’t be rush of refugees heading northwards to escape Romneystan.

I like to think of myself as half-Canadian since I started school in Toronto and then later returned for 10th grade in Calgary.

      1. Nice! I went to school in Toronto, too, till we moved to Edmonton in grade 9.

      2. Steelesview Elementary; it’s still there.

      3. Secord School, in East York. No idea whether it’s still there!
