Most of the high tide trash here in the corner of the Brooklyn Bridge Park salt marsh is made up of the tops of plastic bottles. What a fine place to be reminded of Brooklyn-raised Barry Commoner’s four laws of ecology: everything is connected; everything has to go somewhere; nature knows best; there is no such thing as a free lunch. More on Commoner, who passed away at 95 on Sunday, is found in this appreciation.

Thanks for posting this story Matthew. Sorry to say (likely due to geography), I was not directly aware of Barry Commoner or his work until you shared this. Clearly, the planet lost another one of the good guys, who seems to have succinctly captured our problems so long ago. It is our generation’s responsibility to keep spreading the word and hope that we are not too late in doing so.

Yes, a very interesting thinker, and doer.
Not just geography, but also perhaps time. You are probably somewhere around my age, and so we post-date his 1960s. He actually lived not too far from me, not that I was aware of that.
