Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Sparrow ID

Unaccountably without my bins, I snapped this with my camera’s zoom feature. That’s feature, not actually a zoom lens, unfortunately. Sure, it’s starting to look like it came out of Blow-Up, 1966, highlighting the unreliability of all representation.

But, you will pay particular attention to the shortness of the tail. And could you convince yourself you see a notch at that tail’s tip? Also, is that a suggestion of yellow on the head? Why, it’s a stubby notched tailed song sparrow in drag, of course… either that or a Savannah sparrow, Passerculus sandwichensis.

Now, back to Jane Birkin and Gillian Hills, two entirely different kinds of birds.
