Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Birding Prospect

As I won’t be getting to Prospect Park for the next several days, I decided I needed an early April census of birds to compare the coming weeks to. Yesterday, I entered the Park at 9th Street and walked down to the Pools and through the Ravine and across the Midwood and the Vale and came out at Grand Army Plaza. I saw 29 species: Canada goose, Mallard, Red-tailed hawk, Rock dove, Mourning dove, Belted kingfisher, Northern flicker, Downy woodpecker, Red-bellied woodpecker, Eastern phoebe, Black-capped chickadee, Tufted titmouse, White-breasted nuthatch, Brown creeper, Carolina wren, Ruby-crowned kinglet, Golden-crowned kinglet, American robin, Hermit thrush, Blue jay, Pine warbler, White-throated sparrow, Swamp sparrow, Dark-eyed junco, Common grackle, Red-winged blackbird, European starling, Northern cardinal, House sparrow.
