Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Above Brooklyn

A perfect morning, clear, clean, and warming up.  Carrying fourteen pounds of feline for his appointment with a… uh,  cat scanner… I saw the following birds: busy, loud house sparrows, staking out their nesting sites, squabbling over nesting material; starlings, sailing like kites; a lone silent crow flapping by; at least one noisy blue jay calling out its name; ring-billed gulls high above; pigeons, of course; the sleek silhouette of a falcon, probably a kestrel, disappearing over an apartment rooftop, and then three rousted mourning doves scooting away from it.  Eight species over the city.

UPDATE two hours later: common grackle at Cadman Plaza and mockingbird, of course, in the back yards. Ten species, without even trying (i.e going to the parks or the water).

UPDATE 24-hours later: four northern cardinals at Congress & Clinton.
