Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. Is this a ring-necked parakeet? If so, we have them in London too!

  2. This is actually a monk parrot/parakeet, sometimes in our parts called a quaker because of its noisy squawking (I don’t get the connection myself). The species’ scientific name is Myiopsitta monachus, and we have several colonies of them in Brooklyn. All sorts of stories exist about how they got here, escapees from the airport, etc. They seem to get through winter by huddling together in their stick nests, some of which can grow rather large. The folks at http://www.brooklynparrots.com/ keep a sharp eye on them.
