Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Safe and Sound

Hurricane Sandy gets in your eye. Funky convergence of north-bound hurricane, feeding off hotter than usual ocean (Atlantic temps at 2nd highest record), and south-dipping jet stream pouring in a cold front, plus a full-moon-(last night)-jacked storm surge. The storm is now dumping snow in places.

Radical weather aligns/precedes/accompanies radical climate change.

Reports of lots of flooding — Red Hook, Gowanus, Sheepshead Bay, Coney, etc.– and tree damage — Prospect Park and Green-Wood suffering big losses — in Brooklyn. Nearby Brooklyn Bridge Park seems to have been mostly underwater. Much worse situations found in New Jersey and elsewhere. The power never went off where I live.

I’m going to poke my head out of my shell once the sun comes up — at least in theory, sunrise is 7:25.

  1. Thank you for (all) your reports….very much appreciated….I would love to know how BBP is doing! Be careful!

  2. Glad you’re safe, friend.

  3. Thanks Matthew for this report. Cathline and I are in the Valsugana west of Venezia, where the little village where we are staying for a week had their annual Festa della Castagna interrupted first by a day of heavy rain, that then turned to heavy snow the next day. Everyone here (we are the only Americans) keeps coming up and asking about ‘la tempesta’ and we have no cell phone service so cannot say anything about the storm. Italian TV too is no help, so your little summary was most welcome.

We just came back from a short walk and a kettle of ravens were circling high above. Swallows playing about the campanile. Bluebells leaning over in the melting snow.

    Pace,
    Kevin
