Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Geese Feasts?

On January 30th, I heard about and then saw a dead Canada Goose on the Sylvan Water ice. I passed by several times over the next week wondering if all this frozen meat was going to go to waste in this hard winter.

Then on February 9th I saw that somebody had gotten to it. But who? Ravens? Bald Eagles? The Great Blue Heron that has otherwise inexplicably been sentineling this frozen land? (No wolves, coyotes, or foxes to rip open the flesh around here, btw.)

Sylvan Water’s very round ice-holes, created by ice encroaching on the bubblers oxygenating the pond. Lots of live Canada Geese and their ample droppings surround the circles of water.

Meanwhile, over at the iced-over Bush Terminal Park, another iced goose and …

American Crow… possibly also lamenting absence of medium-to- large carnivores that can rip open carcasses for scavengers.

Brant this time.
