Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Iceland Gull

First winter Iceland Gull/Larus glaucoides. Presumably the kumlieni subspecies (of three). Rare here, and rarer still to get such close-up looks.

With the Usual Suspects, Ring-billed Gulls/Larus delawarensis.

Note the whiteness of the Iceland’s wings. Ring-billed, American Herring, and Great Black-back, the standard local gull species, all have black wing-tips, as the passing Ring-billed shows here.

At another NYC/EDC property, Made in Brooklyn, I was told by a security guy that I couldn’t take photos… of ducks in the bay. Pfffft!

  1. I like them since they are intelligent. They can live up to 33 years. What’s also fascinating about the Iceland gulls is their buoyant flights.

  2. Amazing that their lifetime is up to 33 years! Thanks again for your nature blog🌟
