Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Week V

At 12 o’clock: A Cooper’s Hawk.

At 2 o’clock, an American Kestrel.

And turning around to 6 o’clock, a Merlin. Yes, I was standing in one place and seeing all three of these at the same time.

I noticed this first. This is a long-time Merlin perch, but lately an American Kestrel male has been up there. This turned out to be him. But before I got around to his good side, he flew.

Because an adult Cooper’s had just flown into the next tree over.

Kestrel was not pleased, making a lot of noise and diving at the Coop several times.

Before parking nearby with an eye on the rather bigger hawk. Meanwhile, I walked over to the tree I’ve lately seen a Merlin on.

The bird flew in while I was looking.

Heck of a trifecta!
