Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

A pair of adult Red-tailed Hawks on St. Michael’s. Note how much larger the female is.

St. Mike’s Spike is the raptor command center around here. It’s the tallest thing for blocks and blocks. In addition to Red-tailed Hawks, I’ve also seen Peregrines, American Kestrels, Coopers Hawks, and Merlins up there regularly. This summer I saw my first Osprey perched up there, gobbling a fish.

Other birds noted up there include the local Ravens. And our two crow species can be relied upon to clean up whatever mess the carnivores have made.
