Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Nest Watch

Three baby Ravens! (May 8)

Hmm, is that a Robin’s egg?

Curious American Kestrel nestling. (Just wait till she spots that UFO!)

Mourning Dove.

Under a different pine, what I think is another Mourning Dove’s egg.

Two of at least three Mourning Doves.

Another crow’s nest. I haven’t determined if this is American or Fish, but I suspect American.

Late breaking: as of yesterday, there are four Raven nestlings!

Wow, amazing. Are these ravens in Sunset Park? Hope you’re doing well..

    1. Yes, they are in Sunset Park. I think they are the pair who lost their nest site at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal when their old warehouse was torn down last year (after the breeding season, thankfully).
