Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

When I exit Green-Wood at 4th Avenue and 35th Street, I turn left to head home. As I do so, I eyeball the Sacre-Coeur-stupa of St. Michael’s on 4th and 42nd St. From that distance, I’m looking for more of a disturbances of the Force than anything definite. Raptor, gull, corvid? As I move closer, I start to take pictures in case whatever it is it flies away before I get there. This was the biggest thing up there ever.

Over the years, I’ve seen Peregrines, Red-tailed hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, American Kestrels, and Merlins on this anvil of the raptors. This was my first Osprey. Notice the fish tail….

Not just an Osprey, but one dining!

And excreting.
