Has it been that long since I checked in with the local Great Horned Owls?

Evidently. One of the parents was perched beneath the nest the other day.


And in the nest…!

I thought all owls were cavity nesters, but one as big as this might have trouble finding cavities to fit.
This particular nest location was first built by Red-tailed Hawks. The owls had it for several years, and then one year there were Red-tails up there again. Then the owls came back.
