The local recycling facility is not a landfill, but it sure attracts the crows and gulls. And, lately, again, a Swainson’s Hawk. In 2023, a young Buteo swainsonii showed up at this facility after spending some time on Staten Island. Last year, a Swainson’s was seen here again. And for a week or two recently it has been seen again, this time in adult plumage. (Where does this Western species spend the remaining part of the year?)
I haven’t seen it yet this year. The view of the recycling facility is awful, well away from the action. I’m waiting for a sighting in nearby Green-Wood, where the bird is also sometimes seen.
