Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Coops

While watching the Bald Eagle at Valley Water, I noticed a familiar silhouette in the distance. The bird flew closer, perching in a tree nearer the Baldie. But looking the other way.

Adult Astur cooperii with very full crop. The next thing I knew there was a Red-tail buzzing the eagle before landing in this tree. The Cooper’s flew off.

Later, once the Bald Eagle flew away from Sylvan Water with fish lunch in claws, I heard a high-pitched whiny sound I first thought was a squirrel in distress. Then I realized it was a Cooper’s, this time a juvenile. And another was answering! This one flew off, but the other one, on a nearby tree, flew past me before landing:

So three different Cooper’s in one morning in Green-Wood.

Peace, man.
