Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Something’s Rotten in the Heart of Audubon

The National Audubon Society, with assets of half a billion dollars and a President/CEO who makes over 1 million a year*, has joined forces with the likes of the tech-fascist Elon Musk and the Republican-corrupted Supreme Court to destroy what little labor protections there in this country. Audubon has in recent years turned out to be viciously anti-union, its non-profit status not at all hiding the fact of how embedded it is in capitalist rot. While rightly decrying the Roberts Cabal for undermining environmental regulations, the same organization cheers the illegitimate and corrupt court majority’s assault on labor law.

You can’t pick and choose in this fight for the future. The corporate authoritarianism Audubon is supporting will cut their environmental throats.

This bullshit may, however, shed light on the organization’s refusal to drop the Audubon name, something other (independent) state and local organizations, like NYC’s, have done. Times change. We no longer need celebrate someone who sold slaves to fund his art, yet this reactionary institution holds the nasty course.
