Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

More Leaf-cutting

A Megachile leaf-cutter bee chomps her way through a section of rose leaf. She abandoned this cut when it was about 9/10s done.

Her second cut was successful, but:

The bee dropped down with the leaf section, presumably losing it.

OK, now a third leaf.

This time, a successful cut and carry.

At least to this wooden fence slat. I presume she was resting after these exertions. Still to come was the flight to her nest, where she’ll use this leaf section and others to line the chamber to protect her eggs and their nectar stores.

All three cuts are visible here. The uncompleted one is at the top.

Fascinating! Does yhe bee consume the sap liberated by the cut while making the cut or does it spread over the head of the bee? I don’t see evidence of the liquid in the photos and therefore assume the bee consumes it.
