Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Swamp Darner

Epiaeschna heros is our largest local dragonfly.

They’re usually zipping around, making them difficult to photograph, but occasionally they will hang like this. I’ve seen them a few times clinging to buildings and other structures. This one was at eye-level!

I’ve seen a few hanging on bushes and several over the years taking fresh kills off of car radiators when they were stopped at traffic lights. They are an impressive bug!
