Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Mausoleum of the Wasps

Paper. Looks the aborted nest of a Dolichovespula wasp, probably a Bald-faced Hornet.

Mud. Looks like the work of an Eumenes genus potter wasp.

Paper. Polistes, probably the ubiquitous European Paper Wasp.

Mud. The bare leftovers of the mud tubes built by Organ-pipe Mud-daubers/Trypoxylon politum. Looks like some even older ones above the two in the center. Green-Wood is full of these mud tubes, but I’ve not been successful in finding recent ones, ones built this year (or last). Nearby Prospect Park still has them, as we’ll see soon.
