Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Red-shoulders

Back to our morning Red-shouldered Hawk in Oberlin, Ohio. It wasn’t but a few minutes later when a distinctly Buteo-ish calling was heard in the parky square across the street. A hawk lifted off off the ground and landed on the art museum. Then it flew even closer. When I got my camera on the bird:

If it wasn’t a mewling baby! A brand new Red-shouldered.

I waited a bit to see if the bird would team up with an adult, but that didn’t happen.
