Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

Osprey do like to check out Valley Water in Green-Wood.

American Kestrel update: this female had just flown something edible towards the nest but didn’t enter it. She returned from over the building, so I wondered if there was a fledgling up there somewhere.

Soon afterwards, I saw the male with what might have been a lizard flying towards the nest. Then, some minutes after that, the male was chased by two crows. The crows were in turn chased by a Common Grackle and a Northern Mockingbird. There was some fancy flying by all parties.

Turnabout: the falcon chased the crow.

Don’t mess with this little tiger of the air.
