Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Some New Species

New to me, that its. These first three are all introduced to the region from elsewhere. I found them all on the Wild West Side of Marine Park, amid the ATV tracks, cat/rat feeding stations, trash, and high tide wrack line right at the bordering road.

What the what? Those eyes are all Hymenoptera, but what’s with these antennae? Well, this turns out to be one of the Club-horned Sawflies. I’m thinking Green Honeysuckle Sawfly/Abia lonicerae. Sawflies are not flies; they’re Hymenoptera along with the ants, bees, and wasps, but gotta admit I keep forgetting about them.

Thistle Tortoise Beetle/Cassida rubiginosa. (I think.)

Bronze Ground Beetle/Crabus nemoralis. A slug hunter, which is why it’s been let loose here from its native European habitat.

Wavy Flower Weevil/Madarellus undulates. On my leg. The larvae feed on Poison Ivy!
