Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

The Cranes Are Flying

Seven Sandhill Cranes, the first I’ve ever seen. In the wild, that is. The wilds, as it were, of Brooklyn! Overhead of me in Green-Wood on Tuesday.

I was between two American Kestrels and a Merlin, so I rather perfunctorily took a few shots, thinking they were Great Blue Herons, and then wondered about the weird sound they were making. Then I looked at my photos in more detail….

One response to “The Cranes Are Flying”

  1. Sandhill cranes over Brooklyn! OMG!

The closest I’ve seen them in the northeast is southern NJ, and that was just once. ________________________________
