Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Some Odds and Ends

A couple of weeks ago, there was one Bufflehead on Sylvan Water. Now there are two.

These Bald-faced Hornet nests usually don’t survive this far into winter. (There are no wasps in here; the community dies off in the fall, except for pregnant females, who burrow themselves elsewhere for the winter months.)

Here’s what one more typically looks like come February.

These Baltimore Oriole nests seem to survive due to their incorporation of human-made materials.

We had some snow last weekend.

On the High Line.

Two passings this week:

The Bald Eagle with a black R over 7 band, which I first saw in 2020, was hit and killed by a car on Manhattan’s West Side.

The Eurasian Eagle Owl released from the Central Park Zoo in some kind of animal liberation guerrilla operation also met his end after about a year of flying around Manhattan.
