Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

The morning Red-tailed Hawk. Another American Crow came to greet this youngster. This is the third winter in a row that a young Red-tail has been around Sunset Park.

This is how December 16th began. Not well-photographed through window and two different trees, but there’s the young RT again at 8:37 a.m.

9:50. Peregrine on Mike’s Spike. Spotted the bird from the Raptor Observatory two avenue blocks away. I hustled down to within half a block before the bird flew.

10:18 A big, presumably female, Coopers Hawk perched in Green-Wood’s 4th Avenue extension.

10:23 Another adult Accipiter. Came out of a thick clump of yew and sped off before I could even focus. This one seemed smaller than the previous.

10:42 No Merlin on the usual spot above the Steinway Mausoleum, but not so far away from there…

We’re having technical difficulties at Backyard & Beyond. Combined with the phasing out of my old theme, or format, the only one of many I’ve found that I like, this WordPress situation is cramping my style. Stay tuned.
