Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

This female American Kestrel is pretty much the boss of the territory around the Old Chapel in Green-Wood.

This male likes the Green-Wood corner of 36th and 5th. About ten blocks separate them. Recently, I saw a second male near the Chapel.

Speaking of territory. I noticed the two crows from some distance away, then spotted the Cooper’s Hawk they were shadowing.

One crow joined the crew, but otherwise the corvids did little. One made a sort of knocking noise I usually associate with Common Ravens. But then

A male Kestrel, perhaps the male Kestrel since this was the usual territory, showed up and rousted them all out of the tree.

  1. I love your commentary on the social structure of the raptors/corvids

I can see the male ketrel rousting the corvids, but the female falcon? He either has no brains or no fear. This time he got away with it.

  3. Thanks for your bird photos and commentary!
