Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Storm Leftovers

Washed ashore at Riis Beach: what I think is a Jonah Crab/Cancer borealis claw. About a week earlier, some very large waves were recorded in nearby NJ, so the storm must have really stirred up the bottom.

Lots and lots of West Atlantic Surfclam/Spisula solidissima shells.

Including one of the largest I’ve ever seen: 7″ across.

Big specimens of Northern Moon Snails/Euspira heros shells. The largest I’ve ever come across. (Not a single one was intact, however.)

Pieces of Northern Star Coral/Astrangia poculata, quite rare on the beach normally.
