Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Week Preview

I’ve have been waiting for this scene for a long time. Almost as long as waiting for an American Kestrel to perch on the raised hand of any of the statutes in Green-Wood. (I’ve seen that, but not long enough to get the camera on it.)

This isn’t the only flagpole finial eagle found locally, so I’ve had my eye on them all over the years.

Anyway, it’s time for the holiest week in the raptor year, so buckle up, get some eggnog, and enjoy.
