Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

Two blocks out the door, I see three American Crows chasing a young Red-tailed Hawk. A couple more crows join in, but the hawk, probably the youngster frequently seen around Sunset Park this season, flies out of sight.

Twenty minutes later inside Green-Wood, I see a pair of RTs circling each other.

Twenty-five minutes after that, what is perhaps one of the two seen earlier passes overhead.

(Blog written on a morning where a young Red-tail on the large antenna an avenue block away was the first thing I saw upon opening the curtains at 7:05. Bird was up there two more times by 9:30. Then, just before writing the last of this, the hawk was spotted on the nearer solar roof building.)
