Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Recent Odonata

Two weekends ago, I took a long walk in Brooklyn and saw a huge number of Pantala dragonflies in Green-Wood, Prospect Park, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden. These rain pool gliders spend a lot of time in the air, so it’s hard to document them.

But I did manage to capture images of two perching Spot-winged/P. hymenaea

And here’s a mating pair in the air. The male, below, is essentially flying upside down.

Great Blue Skimmer/Libellula vibrans

Painted Skimmer/Libellula semifasciata

And another.

On one of my recent insect walks, a person with a dragonfly tattoo expressed surprise that dragon- and damselflies have an initial aquatic nymph stage. This is certainly not that.

A pair of Eastern Amberwings/Perithemis tenera adults somehow ended up in the drink, and may not have made it out (they were too far out for me to do anything about it). I presume they crash-landed in mating.
