Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Beetlemania begins…

Fiery Searcher (These last two were dead on the road. )

This was the view at 2pm Wednesday, only in real life it was brighter and, most creepily, yellower. This is like a thick fog, only it’s smoke. On a clear day, you can see the Watchung Mountains in New Jersey twenty miles away. Here we can’t even see the Bay, seven long avenue blocks or a little less than a mile away.
