Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. Last summer we had a pair of Mourning Dove who raised four sets of kids: two at a time. They were in a minimalist nest consisting of a few leaves on the bottom of an oblong basket hanging under the canopy of our trumpet vine–right on our deck. We were able to watch them share the incubating, feeding, and, even after each set fledged, continue to regurgitate into their mouths, even as they mated in preparation for the next set! And I thought I’d worked hard.

    1. It’s amazing how little nest they make, considering they often set up on edges and ledges. That basket sounds idea.
