Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Eggs etc.

Two separate strands of Leaf-footed Bug eggs lined up alongside the underside rib of Pignut Hickory leaflets. Same tree.
Keep a sharp eye out at all times. These were stuck to the paint on a metal gate, which I thought a bit odd.
Let’s get a little closer. They look like dumplings.
The next day: tiny caterpillars! (I unaccountably erased better photos, but not before putting ’em up on iNaturalist.)
The next day, I didn’t make it past this spot. But three days after first spotting the eggs, I returned again, only to find no sign of the caterpillars, just the leftovers of the egg glue.
The location: a bit of a long march, for a tiny caterpillar, to something green….
