Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Marmota Monday

Third Groundhog/Woodchuck I’ve seen recently in Green-Wood.
This one, though, has something going on.
Is this mange? Now, the right side isn’t in full fettle, either, but this side looks like hell.
Whistle Pig agrees?
Actually, this was a yawn/strecth sequence.
And then the animal went back to grabbing big mouthfuls of leaves and grasses for the den.

The poor critter should be trapped and either treated or put down. If it is mange all sorts of mammals are at risk.
