Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Bugs Again!

Common Drone Fly.
Eastern Carpenter Bee “robbing” from the side.
Western Honeybee. All of the above are on Pieris japonica, one of the first plants to produce nectar around here (where, of course, it’s an introduced species).
Elsewhere, at long last, insects and spiders are emerging.

New to the blog? There are years of posts to catch up with, at your leisure, of course. And we do take donations to host all this content.
