Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Weekend Update

Looking bald, a juvenile Red-breasted Woodpecker forages solo in the brave new world of a linden tree.
Asian Tiger Mosquito drawing blood from my calf.
A new wasp in my eyes: Parancistrocerus histrio.
Hackberry Mosaic Virus (Genus Ampelovirus)
Oak Skeletonizer Moth (Bucculatrix ainsliella.
Striped Skunk tracks?
House Sparrows nest in these traffic light support poles and crows look for House Sparrow nestlings in them.
Three-parted Epiblema Moth (Epiblema tripartitana).

Some of the things seen this weekend here in Brooklyn, NY. Four of these were first-time sightings, five if you count the juvenile Red-bellied WP. I’ve seen plenty adults of this woodpecker species, but never a youngster. Definitely sent this data point to the New York Breeding Bird Atlas III project. Kings County has to represent!
