Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Sparrow Fight

A knock-down fight between two male House Sparrows.

Bill-biting seemed to be the main strategy here. I wonder if this is to immobilize this fearsome weapon? (In social media discussion on another topic recently, an ornithologist noted that these birds can inflict a painful bite.)
In his classic The House Sparrow, J.D. Summers-Smith notes that he observed males fighting for up to an hour over nest sites.

Tomorrow: the prize.

  1. They are very aggressive.

  2. We have had our “Enzo” 4 yo House Sparrow and I can say he is the most amazing little companion , there are times he gets a wild but only if his (snuggle shack) Nest is messed with , He becomes very vocal and agitated but with calm talk while sitting on my arm he calms down almost instantly. They are messy eaters and and have no regard for bathroom etiquette lol. He at day break and generally stays with me most of the day by snuggling up to my neck , loves sitting on the caller of my flannel shirt or crook of arm where he tucks his head into his feathers and naps after a midday snack of canary seeds. I hope to have him around for many more years as he means the world to us.

  3. Enjoyed reading about your feathered friend ❤️
