Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. I wonder Matthew, if the monks go into their nests to stay warm?

    1. As I understand it, they are the only parrot species that breeds colonially, so one assumes they huddle up on cold nights like some smaller songbirds are known to do. These birds are native to the Andes, which is presumably why they can deal with our temperate winters.

  2. I hope it’s not a bother, but do you have any suggestions for how to find these birds? I’ve only just found out about the parrots and I really would love to see them! I live near Green-Wood but I haven’t seen any before. Beautiful photos :o)

    1. The 5th Avenue entrance is the place to be. They will range around, searching for fruit trees, but this their H.Q. Listen to some recordings of sounds because often heard before seen https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Monk_Parakeet/sounds
