Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

  1. I have a native plant garden and have always wanted a franklinia but was afraid we were too far north. So glad to see it grows here. Thanks!

    1. Green-Wood has recently planted several. They did have the New York “state champion” tallest specimen, until they lost it. Not sure what happened, but it was cut clean down. It wasn’t a very large tree; they’re really understory plants. They do have beautiful flowers beloved of pollinators. In addition to being a working cemetery, G-W is also a certified arboretum: they’ve have been planting trees of a more southern provenance — like pawpaw and pecan — in anticipation of the warmer climate.
