Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Raptor Wednesday

Another Brooklyn Bald Eagle sighting. The squawking of Canada Geese made me look as the eagle cruised over the Sylvan Water.
A Northern Mockingbird was smacking into the raptor’s back. More recently, I saw a raptor in the distance chased by two small black birds, which turned out to be Fish Crows, identified by their calls. Scale! Eagle again, maybe-probably the same one?
I have the same coloring on my head.
Two Red-tailed nestlings near fledging. Way up in a pine in Green-Wood, a nest of several years standing (and annual repair…).

Not happy to report people don’t think I’m a nutter for decrying American fascism anymore.
