  1. Once while sitting bored on the shore of Lough Derg, Ireland, I innocently let a horsefly linger on my thigh, which was covered by light pants. Everyone else was preparing their sailboats, and I found entertainment in the companionship of a harmless fly. As a remembrance of our brief encounter, a large red welt and intolerable itch accompanied me for days. No wonder horses hate them. (My second post in memory of an insect bite. Surprising)

    1. Some of the flies are vicious! Greenflies and blackflies up in New England, for instance, I don’t want to meet on a sunny day.
