Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

Setting Moon

img_1297About half an hour ago, the Moon set behind the Watchung Mountains of New Jersey. Thus was the view from my nest atop the Harbor Hill Moraine of Brooklyn, as mediated by my hand-held digital camera.

The planets roll on. Meanwhile, here on Earth, Donald Trump has hired the white suprematist Steve Bannon as his chief strategist. While horrifying, it makes perfect demagogic sense: Trump will naturally not be the economic populist many of his voters wanted, so he’ll need to continuously stoke the white nationalist flames as a violent distraction.

No wonder the Moon looks so good! But this is the only planet we’ve got. Do NOT buy the developing conventional wisdom consensus that Trump is normal, deserves a chance, is everybody’s President now. No, no, no!

  1. Your photos and my own communication with nature are my balms. I agree totally with you. about Trump. For the first time in my long life (73 years) I have signed up to volunteer with the Bernie Sanders group Our Revolution.

    1. Thank you, Linda!

  2. About Trump: they said it could not happen here. Gives me a new slant on “American exceptionalism.”

    1. Unfortunately true.

Very upset with Trump and his choices. Thanks for that beautiful photograph of the Moon. We will prevail against him and his dark choices.

    1. We certainly will.
