Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

NYCWFW

wfwThe 8th annual NYC Wildflower Week starts tomorrow. And for the last several years, this event has gotten off with a bang… the explosion of bird voices in the blooming flowers and leafing trees. I call it the Listening Tour: a silent walk through loud woods. We are silent, the woods are loud. Set your alarm and bring your ears. The birds this morning started at 4:20 a.m., according to one of my field agents, who heard them through an open window, so be thankful we get such a late start at 6 a.m.

  1. Really wanted to join you, but a tiring week made it hard to get up early enough 😦

  2. Many thanks, Matthew. This morning’s Listening Tour was an ear-opening, eye-opening, brain-loosening walk through one of NYC’s great parks.
