Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

It’s out there

mantisLike the truth…. Buried in the soil. Tucked underneath bark. In rotting wood. Encased in mud. Coiled in buds. Massed right out there in the open like in this mantid egg case. Can’t you hear it? The roar of life to come? Spring? Summer?
