Backyard and Beyond

Starting out from Brooklyn, an amateur naturalist explores our world.

As John Burroughs said, “The place to observe nature is where you are.”

NYGrapes

Concord, Caco, and Niagara grapes from Buzzards Crest Vineyards, Yates Co., NYS. They have a stand at Borough Hall Saturdays in season. All three of these varieties are off-shoots of the fox grape, Vitis labrusca, native to the northeast. The foxy Concord has long been a favorite of mine.

  1. They sure look familiar! In the early fifties as a teenager I was proud to be able to claim standard women’s wage of $5.00 a day as a picker–20 bushels. I worked in the Anderson vineyards in Jerusalem township, owned by some relatives by marriage.

I was born in Penn Yan and graduated from Keuka College–which sent me to internships in NYC for six weeks every fall. I left the Finger Lakes in 1957 to begin my career at Ohio State University in Columbus, But I still love the lakes and my family is still there. I read in the weekly Penn Yan paper that Yates farmers are selling in NYC farmer markets and trendy restaurants are buying some of the organic products.

    Great photograph!

    1. Market/restaurant connections to local (and further) farms have been one of the good things about the foodie fad.
